Mnangagwa Orders The Arrest Of Soldier & Police Who Assaulted A Man In Handcuffs Along Chiremba Road

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that he was appalled by the behaviour of security forces after they beat up a man in handcuffs.

This follows a documentary done by British Broadcaster Sky News’s Africa correspondent, John Sparks. Mnangagwa tweeted:

I was appalled by today’s Sky News report. This is not the Zimbabwean way. I have instructed that the individuals behind this be arrested and encourage all those impacted to contact the authorities and file an official complaint.

The Sky News report on the documentary reads as follows:

Sparks’ eyewitness account told how he saw a policeman striking a man’s head on Saturday with a truncheon, accompanied by a soldier and a plainclothes security agent who slapped, punched and kicked the man – in broad daylight.

The Sky News crew then followed the group on Harare’s Chiremba Road as the officers ordered the victim to run, then bundled him into a private taxi.

Caught on camera, the policeman then dragged the man out and the group started hitting his face as he sat handcuffed on the ground while onlookers covered their eyes.

Another man in handcuffs was then pulled from the van and ordered to drive the commandeered taxi.

The brutal crackdown started on January 14 after citizens took to the streets in protest against an escalating cost of living. The protests immediately degenerated into rioting, armed soldiers and police were deployed resulting in the killing of at least 12 people and random beatings of hundreds more.
