Zanu PF youth league chairperson for Ward 40 in Whitecliff, Benson Bhobho and members, Charles Bengeza, Shylock Chihuri, Emmanuel Chari, Cassim Muzhingi, Noleen and Rumbidzai Dulana of his executive were on Wednesday charged with public violence by a Harare magistrate.
According to court papers, Bhobho and his accomplices, some who are still at large barricaded the Harare-Bulawayo highway with boulders, burning tyres and throwing missiles at motorists.
They allegedly stopped a ZUPCO bus, forced all passengers to disembark and proceeded to set it on fire.
The same group allegedly chased the workers at a shop owned by Chegutu East legislator Webster Shamu (Zanu PF). The ransacked the shop, looting groceries and set ablaze a Mitsubishi pick-up truck which was parked at the service station, leaving it to burn to ashes.
The ZANU PF youth leaders appeared before Harare magistrate, Elijah Makomo for trial, where they denied the charges. The State was represented by four prosecutors, including Michael Reza, George Manokore and Charles Muchemwa.
