Zanu PF deputy youth secretary Lewis Mathuthu said his party was very happy with the recently announced fuel price hike. President Mnangagwa on Saturday night sent the nation into deep sorrow when he announced that fuel prices will go up by 150 per cent.
Mathuthu said that the move is a positive one since local fuel was being smuggled to neighbouring countries such as Mozambique. Said Mathuthu:
I am very happy that the price of fuel has finally been pegged up to standard in terms of what other countries are doing. A lot of fuel was going out of the country. A lot of our fuel was going to Mozambique, South Africa and DRC.
… We do not expect the prices of other commodities to go up because they are already exorbitant and it was only fuel that was very low and the government was carrying the burden of subsidising fuel using foreign currency, something that we don’t have.
our main problem is foreign currency and increasing the price in bond note will not generate forex. We still need to look for forex with the bond notes. Fares will go up and am not sure where we will get the money.
