Parliament Approves Budget And 2% Tax

The parliament of Zimbabwe has approved the proposed budget for 2019 and the new controversial 2% tax. Zanu-PF MPs reportedly defended the tax while MDC MPs were opposed it saying it was punitive to ordinary Zimbabweans.

Speaking for the adoption of the tax, Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said:

We have just agreed to increase the parliamentary budget to $145 million, where do honourable members think that money is coming from? You are arguing for cars to be given to them, we have agreed and where do theeheld y think the monies are coming from? We are allocating $310 million to the constituencies of the honourable members, where do they think that money is coming from? It is coming from the two percent

Parliamentarians infamously arm twisted the finance minister into accepting their demands for luxury cars (reportedly the Landcruiser V8 model) and additional perks, for them to approve the budget.
