Masvingo Farmers Advised To Prepare For Dry Season

Farmers have been advised to prepare for the worst as a dry season looms. Weather forecasters have predicted below normal rainfall for the 2018/19 farming season as a result of the weather phenomenon scientists refer to as the El Nino Southern Oscillation (El Nino) in short.
Merriam-Webster defines El Nino as an irregularly recurring flow of unusually warm surface waters from the Pacific Ocean toward and along the western coast of South America that prevents upwelling of nutrient-rich cold deep water and that disrupts typical regional and global weather patterns.

Masvingo crop and livestock provincial officer Peter Chamisa said farmers should plant drought-tolerant crops such as small grains be prepared to replant.

Farmers may start planting now if they have prepared the land. The rains being received in different parts of the country signal the start of the rainy season.

Due to the unpredictability of the rainy season as announced by the department of meteorology, farmers might be forced to replant.
