Johhane Masowe WeChishanu Calls On Members To Desist From Child Marriages

The Johanne Masowe WeChishanu Apostolic Sect is urging its members to desist from engaging in child marriage. The call was made by the Sect’s leader in Bulawayo, Emmanuel Mutumwa. Apostolic Sects have for a long time been accused of marrying off their under-age children. Mutumwa said they now have zero tolerance to child marriage in their church. The Marriage Act [Chapter 5:11] governing civil marriage, stipulates that the minimum age of marriage is 16 years for females and 18 years for males. Speaking to journalists in Bulawayo, Mutumwa said

To curb child marriages, we have also opened the Gender and Child Care Unit desks at the church which look out for such matters, helping in getting offenders arrested for the crime… We are also going around addressing all churches under our council, warning them that anyone discovered to have married a child, will suffer the consequences of not only excommunication but arrest.
