Mwonzora Reverses Vic Falls Mayor's Dismissal
MDC Alliance national secretary Douglas Mwonzora reversed a decision by the party’s provincial committee in Matabeleland North to fire Victoria Falls Mayor, Councillor Somvelo Dlamini.
The party’s provincial secretary, Mr Mxolisi Ndlovu, advised Dlamini of his expulsion in a letter dated October 20, 2018, accusing him of defying the party’s directive to stand as deputy mayor and leave the mayorship for preferred candidate, Margaret Varley of Ward 1. However, Mwonzora, wrote to the provincial committee on Wednesday accusing them of not following procedure. He said the provincial executive committee does not have the power to expel any member from the party.
In an interview with The Chronicle, Mwonzora confirmed writing the letter and said the province must follow the party constitution when dealing with issues. He said if the province wishes to remove the mayor they will have to call him for a hearing.
