Election Failed To Meet Standards That Zimbabwe Committed Itself To – EU Election Observers Clarify

The European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) has clarified on the standards that it used in judging the July 30 harmonised elections. The EU declared that the elections did not meet international standards and that the results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission were unreliable as they lacked “adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability.” This did not go down well with sections of Zanu-PF and state media who argued that the election was good enough because it met Sadc and African Union standards. Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana also said that the party was not aware of the standards which the EU EOM had used.

Responding to this and other such question the EU election observers explained that they had actually used standards that Zimbabwe had committed itself to in treaties and commitments. Said the EU EOM on social media,

Frequent question: what are those standards the EUEOM refers to? The EUEOM did not use any standards that are not applicable in Zimbabwe. The EUEOM analysis is based only on standards defined in treaties and commitments the Republic of Zimbabwe has itself committed to.

  1. Zimbabwe Elections broke their own rules and those of SADC, AU etc. There are no election rules where murder is condoned. ZANU Comments are an insult to citizens of Zimbabwe.
