Constitution Would Need To Be Amended If Chamisa Accepts Mnangagwa's Offer - Justice Minister

Minister of Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi has said that the 2013 Constitution would need to be amended if opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s accepts President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s compromise offer to formally recognise him as the leader of the opposition. This comes after Mnangagwa told Bloomberg television that he plans to adopt the Commonwealth parliamentary democracy system in which the leader of the opposition is formally recognised and gets a salary from the government.

Speaking to NewsDay, Ziyambi said,

It will need that (constitutional amendment) if there is a political agreement given the fact that he (Chamisa) is not an elected MP as things stand. The amendment will need to reflect the agreement, but that is up to the parties. The parties would need to negotiate and agree. Once that is in place, we will then have a look at the Constitution and see what needs to be done to accommodate the new set-up.

However, Chamisa’s camp has made it clear that they are yet to receive a formal offer from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
