City Of Harare Workers Should Get Salary Hikes: Councillor

MDC Alliance councillor Jacob Mafume has proposed that employees for Harare City Council (HCC) should get salary hikes. Mafume said this is necessary to retain skilled manpower. Speaking at the handover ceremony of firefighting equipment donated by Operation Florian, Mafume who was standing in for mayor Herbert Gomba said,

After training these people with such high skills, they are now sought-after because they are good. They leave council for better pastures. This is one area we need to look at. We need to pay them well, improve the conditions of service for the workers so that we can keep the best.

Ratepayers have complained of poor service delivery from Harare City Council, while the council has often blamed residents for not paying rates. The ratio of salaries to service delivery is reported to be more than 70:30.
