Chiwenga Promises Financial Sector Reform To Deal With Multi-Tier Pricing

Vice President Constantino Chwienga has said that the government is going to reform the financial sector in order to fix issues of multi-tier pricing. Speaking at the Annual National Agri-Business Conference, Chiwenga said,

Government is also aware of the pricing challenges being experienced by many of agro-input suppliers who are charging farmers different prices depending on the mode of payment. l am further aware that this practice is not being done by agro-input suppliers but that it is a wave that has engulfed the whole economy.

Therefore Government will work on financial sector reforms with all stakeholders to stabilise the situation. In light of the foregoing, there is need to conduct research to establish whether the current model of supporting farmers through producer price subsidy is the most ideal.

  1. Multi tier pricing throughout the economy is here to stay for as long as there is cash shortage in the market place. The present situation fuels black market currency trading. The solution will be introduction of a local currency. The challenge though is will people embrace a local currency given their mistrust of government? The chances of a new currency suffering the same fate as the bond are extremely high. So Mr VP I wish you a lot of luck in your endeavours because you will need a lot of it.
