SA Govt Vows To Speed Up Land Reform After US President Trump Criticizes The "Farm Seizures" And "Large-Scale Killing Of Farmers"

The South Africa government has hit back at United States President Donald Trump after he called for a probe into South Africa’s land reform programme. Trump alleged that there were large-scale killings of white farmers and said that he had tasked US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to look into the matter. Said Trump on Twitter,

I have asked Secretary of State @SecPompeo (Mike Pompeo) to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large-scale killing of farmers. “South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers.”

Unsurprisingly, the South African government did not take kindly to the remarks which they said seek to divide their nation. They also vowed to speed up the pace of land reform. Writing on the government’s official Twitter account, the government said,

South Africa totally rejects this narrow perception which only seeks to divide our nation and reminds us of our colonial past…South Africa will speed up the pace of land reform in a careful and inclusive manner that does not divide our nation.

Critics of the land reform programme have warned that South Africa risks becoming like Zimbabwe if it follows through with the land reform process. Advocates for the programme say it will be better managed and will not have disastrous consequences.
