Mnangagwa Says He Is Yet To See Pictures Of Soldier Shooting Into Civilians, Says He Does Not Want To Pre-empt Commission Findings

In an interview with Peta Thornycroft, President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa claimed that he is yet to see any pictures of a soldier firing into protesters and bystanders. When asked why the soldier in question has not been arrested, Mnangagwa said that he does not want to pre-empt the findings of a commision of inquiry that he is setting up. He is an excerpt from the interview,

Peta Thornycroft: There is one photograph shown in the media of a soldier shooting and another soldier stepping forward and stopping him on August 1. What are your views on that?
Emmerson Mnangagwa: I have not seen that picture.

Peta Thornycroft: It’s a shocking picture. Why hasn’t he been arrested?
Emmerson Mnangagwa: Orders have been given about all those people who took the law into their own hands, whether it was police or others who take the law into their own hands. I also don’t want to pre-empt the outcomes of the commission I am instituting.

…Peta Thornycroft: Returning to the shooting in Harare on August 1. Who gave the order to the army because General Valerio Sibanda says he did not give the order?
Emmerson Mnangagwa: I have replied to this. You are so repetitive…This is typical like Mugabe. We walked together for 54 years and he didn’t trust me.
No one gave orders …there is this perception and it is disjointed. I explained, the army has a strict command structure, I am the commander-in-chief and matters are handled according to the process.
