Exiled former cabinet minister and G40 Faction kingpin, Jonathan Moyo has called on the international community to impose sanctions on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government. Moyo said the sanctions should be levied following the deaths of at least 6 people who died after soldiers used live bullets on protesting opposition supporters. Moyo who is a rabid critic of Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga wrote on Twitter,
1. @MinisterSBMoyo is lying that lives were lost on 1 Aug “AFTER MDC-Alliance supporters turned violent”. Lives were lost AFTER govt sent soldiers with LIVE AMMUNITION to kill civilians.
2. A govt that deploys soldiers to kill civilians DESERVES SANCTIONS!
Soldiers like @MinisterSBMoyo & politicians like @edmnangagwa have participated in atrocities since 1980 in Zimbabwe & other countries such as #DRC with impunity; always blaming the victims; lying through their teeth & getting away with it. Their latest atrocity was on 1 August!
It has to be said quite clearly without any equivocation, fear or favour that sanctions should be imposed on the military govt in Zimbabwe by Sadc, AU, UN & the international community at large for deploying the Army to kill in cold blood, unarmed fleeing civilians on 1 August!
SANCTIONS are the only peaceful means available to the international community to reign in a military govt that grabs power through violence, uses violence to stay in power & subverts the will of the people by sending its Army to massacre unarmed, fleeing protesters & bystanders!
Before he was forced into exile following the fall of former President Robert Mugabe, Moyo launched a year-long $150 000 research into the effects of Western sanctions on the Zimbabwean economy. Said Moyo then,
There can be no question that the sanctions affected the economy because even those who imposed them intended them to have an effect, it is the question of extent that we are looking into.
