The British Embassy in Harare has said that it has been involved in talks with Zimbabwean authorities to ensure that opposition politician Tendai Biti will be granted his constitutional rights. This comes after Biti was handed over to the Zimbabwean authorities by their Zambian counterparts in defiance of a court order from the Zambian High Court. Biti was denied political asylum by the Zambians who said that his case was very weak as there was no breakdown of law and order in Zimbabwe.
Writing on Twitter, the British Embassy said,
We continue to follow Tendai Biti’s case very closely. UK diplomats spoke to Zambian and Zimbabwean authorities overnight. We (and others) are seeking clear assurances from the Zimbabwean authorities that his safety will be guaranteed and constitutional rights fully respected.
