Army Called To Evict Illegal Gold Panners From Foreign Owned Gold Mine

The Zimbabwe National Army is reported to have evicted illegal gold partners who had invaded Gaika Mine in Midlands. The mine is owned by Jersey-based and privately owned Duration Gold who purchased the mine in 2006. The eviction comes after violent clashes between illegal gold miners over control of the mine.

Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube had previously said,

Police must act on the violence which has currently gripped our city. Arrest anyone who is seen wielding a machete or a perpetrator of violence.

A source who spoke to New Zimbabwe said,

The army and police have launched a joint operation to kick out the illegal gold panners who had invaded the mine. There is a currently a High Court order barring all gold mining activities at the mine.
