Insurance Industry Worried About Reduced Police On Roads, Says People Are Flouting Regulations

Insurance expert and NicoDiamond managing director Grace Muradzikwa has called for an increase in police presence on the country’s roads saying that people are wantonly breaking road rules. She cited the increase in the number of people driving unregistered vehicles and said that this would affect the insurance industry negatively. Speaking to Business Weekly, Muradzikwa said,

As an industry some of the observation that we are making and especially coming from the claims and how some of these accidents are happening, generally flouting of general road regulations. There is just a general flouting because everybody knows that there is no one to police…We have also seen an increase in hit and run accidents and this will result in an increase in fraudulent claims because people cannot attach ownership to the motor vehicle involved

…What we are saying as an (insurance) industry is that police must do their law enforcement as their presence helps as a deterrent. We are not saying that let’s go back to where things were before (when police were going beyond their law enforcement duties and harassing motorists).
