Mugabe Snubs Parly Portfolio Committee Hearing Again, Mliswa Warns Parly Has Power To Jail

Former president Robert Mugabe was a no-show again at the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy today. This is the second time in less than a week that Mugabe has failed to attend the Temba Mliswa led committee which is investigating missing diamond revenues from the Chiadzwa diamond fields. Mugabe is expected to explain a claim he made in 2016 when he said that the country could have lost US$15 billion from the diamond fields.

After Mugabe failed to attend last week’s hearings Mliswa attributed Mugabe’s absence to the time he had been summoned saying that it was too early for the elderly former President. Said Mliswa then,

Even when he was still President, because of his age, Mugabe held cabinet meetings at 12 pm.

In the morning, Zanu-PF representative in the United Kingdom and Europe, Nick Mangwana had tweeted,

He made ridiculous $15 billion claims for factional expediency. It’s not much to ask him to explain how he arrived at that figure and whatever else was happening. It’s only fair that he appears b4 parliament. No one is above the law. So one hopes he does the right thing today.

Temba Mliswa said that Parliament was going to write a final letter to the former president summoning him to appear before Parliament. Mliswa warned that if Mugabe does not appear again, then he will be in contempt of Parliament. Mliswa said that Parliament has the power to jail people and gave an example of the late MDC treasurer Roy Bennett who was jailed by Parliament following an altercation with Minister Chinamasa.

Mugabe is now scheduled to appear before the committee on the 11th of June.  However, Contempt of Parliament no longer carries a custodial sentence.
