Mnangagwa Under Fire To Fire Mukupe As Citizens Petition High Court

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is now under pressure to dismiss deputy Finance and Economic Development minister Terence Mukupe for assaulting Ignatius Mvere over travel allowance after six members of the public petitioned the High Court. Mukupe, Mvere, Prosecutor-General Prince Machaya and Mnangagwa were cited as the respondents.

Through their lawyer Tafadzwa Mugabe of Tafadzwa Ralph Mugabe Legal Counsel, Stephanie Mutasa, Rachel Chichewo, Kimberly Hanyani-Mlambo, Nompilo Simanje, Simisosenkosi Mloyi and Lisah Kasvosve are arguing that the deputy minister acted unlawfully and should be fired. In their application they argue that Mukupe violated Sections 68 and 196 (3) (c) of the Constitution. They argue that if he is not fired, Mukupe will continue being a threat to other civil servants. Part of the application reads:

Additionally, the first respondent is a threat to other civil servants under his employ. His continued service as deputy minister of Finance is a threat to national funds in respect of which the applicants pay taxes. Unless this honourable court intervenes, there is a risk and possibility that the first respondent will continue to undermine the Constitution and thus the applicants’ confidence in the public administration, threaten employees and seek to use his position to unduly enrich himself at the expense of the fiscus
