Only 25 Percent Is Paying Taxes, We are owed $4,2 Billion By Private Sector: Zimra

Faith Mazanhi, the Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has said that more than 75 percent of businesses in the private sector are not paying their tax obligations. As a result, the revenue collector was owed $4.2 billion as of the beginning of April. Speaking in Bulawayo on Thursday, Mazanhi said,

As at end of first quarter ended March 31, 2018, the authority’s tax debt was sitting at $4,227 billion and of this 80 percent is owed by the private sector.

…It is only just a quarter of registered business players complying with their tax filing obligations. This leaves the tax burden on the shoulders of a few companies and individuals.

However, business disputed the figures saying that Zimra was miscalculating and that it’s ICT system was not up to date.  Mazani conceded that there may be issues with Zimra’s ICT system and said efforts were being made to fix it.

We are doing our best to clean our systems and we hope by the end of the year we will give accurate accounts and issue clearance based on proper balances.
