Zimbabwe Must Confront Its Violent Past, Gukurahundi Needs Closure: Biti

Former minister of finance and opposition politician Tendai Biti has called for the government to put closure on the dark spots in the country’s history which resulted in the loss of many lives. Biti highlighted the Gukurahundi massacres in the early 1980s, violence associated with the land reform program as well as the violence in 2008 which is estimated to have resulted in the deaths of 300 opposition supporters.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Biti said,

We have to put closure to Gukurahundi. We have to put closure to the events of 2008 — we have to put closure to the violence associated with the land-reform programme. Gukurahundi made a huge chunk of Zimbabweans feel like they did not belong,” he said. It’s a “challenge of the unresolved national question: What does it mean to be Ndebele and Zimbabwean. We have to put closure to the iniquities, the omissions, the commissions of that sad period — those sad periods of our time.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has refused to apologise for Gukurahundi and has said consistently said that bygones should be bygones.
