SA Crack Police Unit Targeting Mnangagwa's Rescuer

South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks are targeting South Africa-based Zimbabwean businessman and Big Time Strategic Group founder Justice Maphosa. Maphosa has been credited by President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the man who rescued and sheltered him last year when he was being pursued by people allied to former President Robert Mugabe when the Zanu-PF factional fights reached a breaking point.  Mnangagwa says that he was sheltered by Maphosa after he managed to flee into Mocambique by foot because all the border points were on alert to rescue him.

The Hawks are investigating allegations that Maphosa committed a multi-million Rand fraud. He is alleged to have illegally received tenders worth millions of Rand from many municipalities in the North West without following procurement procedures.  In February Maphosa was convicted of fraud for presenting fake tax invoices to the South Africa Revenue Services (SARS). He was given a suspended sentence of eight years after entering into a plea bargain to repay R843 080.40 by January 2019.
