The Zimbabwe Republic Police has distanced itself from Gye Nyame Diamond Mining Company. Gye Nyame is supposed to have been a joint venture between the state-owned Zimbabwe Mining Development Company (ZMDC), Bill Minerals, and the ZRP Trust to exploit the Marange diamond fields. However, the police said that there is no paperwork for the company and claimed that everything relating to the company was personally run by former ZRP boss Augustine Chihuri. Senior police officers testified that the company virtually belonged to Chihuri who ran it without input from anyone.
Testifying before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy led be Temba Mliswa, senior officers said,
Nobody in the police force knew about its paper work, operations and staff compliments expect Chihuri. He (Chihuri) literally handpicked his own men and women to run the operations of the diamond company. And even the revenue generated by the company never reached police coffers.
Company secretary Kenneth Mawodzwa added,
…The company did not have even a bank account…But what I can tell you for sure is there were some diamonds that had been mined before, how they were sold, I don’t know but Chihuri knows.
Chihuri failed to appear before the committee for the second time and his current whereabouts are currently unknown. In a previous hearing of the portfolio committee, Temba Mliswa said,
