If "The Past Is Dead" Should People Forget The Liberation Struggle? - Mnangagwa Questioned

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been told by various groups on national healing that the past cannot simply be buried for expediency’s sake. Some commentators went further saying that in forgetting the past, there should be selectiveness meaning that the liberation struggle would also have to be forgotten.

Since coming into office, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has constantly preached that people should let bygones be bygones, and has refused to apologise for his role in the Gukurahundi atrocities in the early 1980’s.

Governance expert Tony Reeler said,

You cannot ignore the past because you need to build on that past to move forward. If we talk of forgetting the past, can we also forget the liberation struggle since it is in the past?

Anybody in his right senses cannot say let bygones be bygones. I think what the president means is that we need the commitment to move forward. If you kill my wife, can we say let bygones be bygones?

So let’s give President Mnangagwa the benefit of doubt and assume he means we need commitment as a nation to move forward. But then what are the mechanisms that will help us to move forward, that help us not to go back to a painful past?

Gilford Sibanda of Ibhetshu Likazulu added,

Due process needs to be followed, starting with the truth, followed by justice, forgiveness, healing, then reconciliation.
