TeleCash Users Can Now Register For EcoCash As Well

Users of the mobile network operator, Telecel and its mobile money service TeleCash are now able to register for and use EcoCash’s mobile money service.  This comes a few days after EcoCash opened up its service to NetOne’s  OneWallet users.  With this new development, it means that all of Zimbabwe’s mobile money users can now use EcoCash. However, at the moment both OneWallet and Telecash users cannot use shortcodes as there is no facility for USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data). Instead, they have to download the official EcoCash application for transacting.

This maybe EcoCash’s response to the directive issued a few weeks back by Minister of Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security Supa Mandiwanzira to all mobile money companies to integrate their systems to allow seamless movement of funds between NetOne, TeleCash and EcoCash.

However, critics are arguing that EcoCash is going against the spirit of the minister’s directive to offer interoperable services by creating a mobile money monopoly.  EcoCash already has 98 percent of the mobile money market share.
