Amend Your Constitutions Or Face Prosecution Political Parties Warned
Launching a women’s manifesto initiated by the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus (ZWPC) in Harare today, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda urged political parties to align their constitutions with the Constitution of Zimbabwe to enable the realisation of the 50/50 gender representation in parliament.
Mudenda urged political parties to follow the constitution or risk prosecution. The achievement of 50/50 gender equality across all sectors in line with constitutional provisions on equality remains unattainable as most political parties have not adopted this in their constitutions. Advocate Mudenda encourages female politicians to challenge the status quo and fight hard for their constitutionally enshrined rights to equality. Said Mudenda:
You must take up the matter with your political parties ahead of the election. The constitution is very clear that women should have equal representation in the socio – economic and political sphere in society.
