Khupe Challenges Chamisa, Says She’s The Real MDC-T Leader

MDC-T co-vice president Thokozani Khupe issued a statement insisting that she is the party’s legitimate acting president as provided for by the party’s constitution.

Khupe challenged her colleague Nelson Chamisa who was appointed acting president by the party’s national council. In the statement she argues that the party’s constitution does not have provisions for additional deputy presidents. She also argues that the constitution only applies to elected individuals like her not Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri who were hand-picked by Mr Tsvangirai. Said Khupe:

Following the tragic passing on and the burial of our dear leader president Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai, it is important that the party returns to normalcy. This can only be done if the party goes back to its constitution.

It is clear from reading of clause 6.4.4.1 that among other office bearers, the deputy presidents are members of the Standing Committee. However, they have to be elected by congress.

Clause 9.2 makes provision for the duties of the deputy president. It does not make provisions for the duties of the additional deputy presidents.

The deputy president in clause 9.2 can only be the deputy president elected by congress. Clause 9.21.1 provides that in the event of the death of the president, the deputy president assumes the role of the acting president pending the holding of the extraordinary congress within a year.

he deputy president is the deputy president provided for in clause 9.2 that is to say the one elected by congress.

There is therefore no role of the national council to elect an acting president because this is already provided for in the constitution. To that end I am the acting president of the MDC-T as provided for in both clauses 9.2 and clause 9.21.1 of the constitution.

  1. I totally understand you Lady K, CONSTITUTIONALLY you are the rightful heir to the throne BUT what you have to understand is as a party you have to go with the will of the people and the people want young blood by the name of CHAMISA. In loving memory of our leader Morgan Tsvangirai, do the right thing and handover the baton, ngatifambei nebhora, lm a woman and lm totally for women empowerment but on this one, sorry dear

  2. In your head you are convinced you are the rightful leader of the party but are you thinking of what the party members want. If I were you I would work closely with Chamisa the peoples choice. Never mind what the constitution says because people can reverse all that as and when they feel you no longer represent their interest.. Constitutionalitty or no constitutionality, I dont see anyone between you and Mudzuri stopping Chamisa from taking over MDC. What you two should be thinking of now is whether to stay in MDC or to form your own party.
