UZ Boss Who Conferred Suspect Degree On Grace Mugabe Gets Contract Extension
University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Vice-Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura has had his appointment extended by another two years. Critics have been calling for Nyagura’s head for conferring a suspect Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree on former first lady Grace Mugabe in 2014 and bringing the UZ’s reputation into disrepute.
Allegations have been made that the wife of the former Chancellor of all State Universities, former president Robert Mugabe, did not take the required period of time to complete the degree or defend her thesis. Grace’s thesis was only released last week, almost four years after graduation. However, the release of the thesis has reignited debate and generated further scrutiny on Grace’s degree as there seems to be evidence of plagiarism and academic cheating. The thesis also appears to have been done well into 2016, even though the degree was awarded in 2014. The lecturers in the UZ’s Sociology Department have disavowed any knowledge of the former first lady fulfilling any of the requirements for completing the degree and have called for an investigation into the matter.
