Tsvangirai Is The One Who Asked To Delay The 2018 Elections Claims George Charamba

George Charamba, the spokesperson for President Emmerson Mnangagwa claimed that opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to suspend the holding of elections. This is a direct contradiction to Professor Jonathan Moyo’s claim that Mnangagwa and his deputy General (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga had visited Tsvangirai last week, in order to negotiate to delay the elections. Moyo made the claims when he was interviewed by Zeinab Badawi on BBC Hardtalk.

Speaking to the Daily News, Charamba said:

Tsvangirai asked if we could delay elections, his reasons were couched in legalism. The president said that there was need for a formal submission on the issues that needed attention so that they could be considered.

… But the president and the vice presidents are riding high on the change that happened in November. If we are to go for elections, it would be a white wash. It is the opposition that wants to buy time as it would be in their interest.

And since their leader has hinted on handing over power, if it’s before elections, it means they would need a new leader to give him a profile, so time is not on their side.

However, there is also the aspect of electoral timelines that should be adhered to after the proclamation of elections.

However, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka denied Charamba’s assertion, saying that no discussion on postponing elections ever took place. Said Tamborinyoka:

That was not raised in the meeting to the best of my knowledge. I think I issued a statement after that meeting with ED and that matter was never a subject for discussion

  1. African leaders are and had always been propagandists,so to all those who understand their nature, all these statements are nit a surprise.Instead of decampaign the opposition with better and tangible achievements they do it by throwing deceptive rubbish.

  2. Adams Mundoko is the one who petitioned the Parliament and the President ED Munangagwa and MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai on 20 December 2017 proposing to stop elections for 3 years and then impose Government of National Unity for the period before General elections.
