Bulawayo Recommends Heroes Status For Zanu-PF Youth Leader Who Booed Grace And Accelerated Mugabe’s Fall

Zanu-PF Bulawayo has recommended that Magura Charumbira who was the party’s central district chairperson be awarded a liberation hero.

Zanu-PF Bulawayo Province chairperson Christopher Sibanda told The Chronicle that the province has since written to the party’s politburo over the issue. Said Sibanda:

The provincial leadership has unanimously recommended that Cde Charumbira be declared a liberation hero and be buried at the Provincial Hero’s Acre in Nkulumane. We haven’t met his family to discuss the issue but it is our hope that they will consent to our plans as a party. He was a vibrant party member who could have done more in Zanu-PF. There are only a few people of his calibre. He was dedicated to the ethos of the party hence his death is a serious loss for us as Zanu-PF.

Charumbira died on Monday at the 56km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway near the Norton tollgate after a Mercedes Benz in which he was a passenger crashed into a stationary haulage truck. The driver of the Mercedes Benz and other passengers survived the crash.

Charumbira is knowing for leading a group of Zanu-PF Youths that heckled and booed former first lady Grace Mugabe at a Youth Interface Rally in November last year. His actions indirectly accelerated the events which led to the downfall of Mugabe and the ascendancy of Mnangagwa after Mugabe made good on his threat to fire Mnangagwa.  This resulted in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces launching Operation Restore Legacy less than two weeks later.
