Mnangagwa, Dabengwa Planned To Challenge Mugabe in 2018

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa planned to revive the Patriotic Front to challenge former President Robert Mugabe in the 2018 elections. The project was developed by the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) and the Zipra-Veterans Association. However, the project became academic after the military intervention by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in November 2018. Speaking to NewsDay, Dabengwa said:

It is not true that the offer came from President Mnangagwa. It came, but from people in the region who wanted to persuade me to join the government. The initial discussions were between the Zipra veterans and Mutsvangwa as well as Matemadanda, whose understanding was that a post-Mugabe scenario would mean a return to the Patriotic Front.

I had placed a condition to Mutsvangwa that I would never work under the Unity Accord because as far as I am concerned, that document is null and void.

…If Mugabe was to stick to the idea of standing in the 2018 election, he would have to be challenged and the ZNLWVA was to leave him with the G40 faction. Mnangagwa, indeed, was to be part of the walkout.

But this plan was overtaken by events after the military intervention in November. Things moved so fast for all of us. We did not expect it.
