First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa has called on the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to stop Early Childhood Development (ECD), saying that it is anti-girl child as it contributes to high rates of school dropouts. She said this while addressing heads of Government departments and other stakeholders before sharing an early Christmas party with children from Binga district at the Catholic-run Sunrise Children’s Home in Binga yesterday,
The first lady was responding to a report that Binga District has 20 892 infants in ECD A and B. Said Mnangagwa:
We don’t want to hear about this ECD. With the ECD A and B, the girl child will spend nine years to get to Grade Seven. This is too much especially for the girl child who will have grown big before they get to Form Four and this is contributing to high rates of school drop-outs.

Well, I am zanuphobic but that woman has a good point. Why add so much to the cost of this useless education system which can only produce worker minded products? We need a mindset revolution and discard this status quo in which everyone dreams of being a manager in some big company.
ECD is not forced and should not be forced . if you think your girl child should not go through ECD then let your thinking affect your child only and not for you zanuphobia to try and influence policy that affect other kids . The respected first lady says there are “two more years added before the girl child completes primary and by that time the girls will be big ” Haa madam that not true! ECD is being started at 3 to 4 years and at five your child starts grade 1 . if ECD was starting at 5 then you can talk of the girl becoming big . what is the rationale behind removing ECD ? The two extra years are pre – grade one age
Well
the first lady is saying the truth ,ECD its too much .thank you for the call ma’am.girl child is dissadvantaged by this .14 yrs some will very big .
Leadmore Magomo with all due respect get your facts right before u respond. Children below 7 years of age are being denied entry to grade 1 in the new curriculum. I am 100% behind the first lady she is right… esp for the girl child it’s very true
I strongly support this idea
There is nothing wrong with ECD. Its a move which made even poor children to attend school at an early age. Just like kindergartens/ crèches they were there be4 ECD but only a few parents could afford the exorbitant fees.
The firat lady is 100% right. Unles if they reduce years for starting grade one then may it will work but as it stands 9 years is too much for our girls.
A drop of ink may make a million think. Let’s hear from the parents with children who are due to start Ecd.
I support the first lady, ecd is not suppose to be imposed, the kids need time to play and enjoy early childhood without being forced to mature by going to school early…..that stage of their lives is very important, don’t force them to mature before time
The First Lady is right ECD has become a complication and heads have come up with rules that make it difficult for thz that ddnt afford to get their children to ECD.truth is ECD is expensive worse now that the teachers r to be paid by parents.
Valid viewpoint First Lad, It is a waste of resources too.
Cry the beloved Dokora, the man who was carrying the ECD vision. I have gone through some comments, I have realized that some people don’t even know what ECD is all about. Destroy the ECD education and let’s see Zimbwabwe prosper. What a pity!!!!
So you think Zimbabwe will prosper simply because ECD is forced on our kids? A country can only develop if we encourage hardwork and common sense. We have lots of educated people in this country but we lack common sense, hence the abject poverty in which we are. I have read backgrounds of a number of inventors and have noticed that many of them were barely educated. They simply had lots of imagination, hardwork and determination. We as parents also have to encourage our kids to be innovative and view life from the investor side rather than the consumer side. We are too theoretical, hence our quest for job hunting. When the whiteman left this country we followed him because we cannot live without his york. While we teach our kids how to write a good cv, an investor minded parent will be teaching his child on how to come up with a presentable project proposal.
Sure this ECD issue needs a lot of attention Gvt schools are charging a lot of money which is beyond the reach of many
