Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander General Constantino Chiwenga has sued Higher Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo for defamation. He is demanding $5 million for a press statement issued by Moyo on 9 July insinuating that he did not earn his doctorate degree with the University of KwaZulu Natal, but someone wrote his thesis on his behalf.
Chiwenga says that part of the press statement by Moyo which is defamatory reads:
Finally, I’m happy that Chiwenga wants pre and post-independence disclosures about who was who, who did what and so forth. That’s good. Meanwhile, I take that to mean he wants the disclosure of who contributed what to his doctorate and who really wrote his KZN PhD. Again, the Shona wisdom that kunyarara kurinani pane kutaura, applies. #Handeitione.
Through his lawyers, Mr Wilson Manase and Mr Wellington Pasipanodya of Manase and Manase Legal Practitioners, Chiwenga argues the statement was highly defamatory and he is entitled to the damages. The lawyers argued that Chiwenga suffered severe damage to his reputation and moral standing as a military boss and decorated liberation fighter. Jonathan Moyo is yet to respond to the lawsuit.
