UZ To Close, Exams Deferred to January After Students Refuse To Write Exams Until Mugabe Resigns

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has announced that it will be closing down for the semester on Tuesday, a week earlier than expected. This comes after students at the university went on strike protesting against a number of issues. The students said:

  • That they would not write their exams until President Robert Mugabe steps down.
  • That first lady Grace Mugabe should return the PhD from the University of Zimbabwe’s Faculty of Social Studies Department of Sociology which she received in 2014.
  • That Vice Chancellor Levi Nyagura should resign

As a result of the demonstrations, the University decided to close the semester a week early. The end of semester examinations have been deferred to January 8-24, 2018 at the university. A notice signed by Dr N.A. Mutongoreni, the University Registrar said that students in residence will stay for free during the examinations period in January.

The Notice Reads:
