Official: Zanu-PF Fires Mugabe, Reinstates and Replaces him with Mnangagwa (Updated)

The ruling Zanu-PF party has passed a resolution removing President Robert Mugabe from his position as party leader and first secretary of Zanu-PF. The party replaced him with his aide of more than 40 years, former Vice President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa who now becomes the party leader and first secretary of Zanu-PF. This came after the Zanu-PF Central Committee held an extraordinary session in which Mnangagwa was reinstated before being elected as party leader on Sunday.  Mnangagwa, however, is the acting leader of the party. His position will need to be ratified by the Zanu-PF Congress in December. The Zanu-PF Central Committee is the party’s highest decision-making body outside of Congress.

First Lady Grace Mugabe has also been expelled from Zanu PF and banned for life. The same applies to Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere, Ignatius Chombo and Patrick Zhuwao. Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko was also recalled from his party position of the second secretary of Zanu-PF for “protecting criminals.”

Zanu PF legal secretary Patrick Chinamasa announced that all party members expelled since December 2014 are reinstated with immediate effect.

President Mugabe was not expelled from party though.

Parliament is expected to impeach Mugabe on Tuesday, unless he makes a deal with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces generals, for him to step down, with dignity.  Mugabe had initially agreed to step down in principle but was unable to agree on his exit package.
