Cops Use Fake Search Warrant To Rob Businessman of $260 000 Gold

Zimbabwe Republic Police officers Innocent Mureri Moyo (36) and Melody Musengezi (40) who are attached to the Commercial Crimes Unit appeared in court facing charges of theft. The two cops allegedly connived with three civilians, Blessmore Sibanda (28), Jessica Maria Aurthers and Steven Moreley Hann, to steal gold worth $262 000, US$10 000 cash and $11 000 worth of bond notes from a Harare businessman. One of the civilians Aurthers once worked for the complainant and supplied information to the gang on where he kept his valuables.

The state alleges that the cops obtained a search warrant using a fake reference number before proceeding to the complainant’s house in Borrowdale. When they were denied access into the house by the complainant’s son, they assaulted him and threatened to shoot him before forcing their way into the house. They ransacked the house and stole $9 980, $11 000 worth of bond notes and 4 781 grammes of gold. Some of the gold was allegedly sold on the black market.

Harare Magistrate Josephine Sande granted $100 bail each to Moyo, Musengezi and Sibanda. Aurthers and Hann who first appeared in court on Saturday were granted $500 bail each on Monday.
