The Board of Censors has refused to ban striptease clubs around the country at a consultative meeting organised by the board on Wednesday. Academic, Professor Ruby Magosvongwe had called for the banning of the clubs saying that they were immoral and against the cultural values of Zimbabweans. She argued:
What legacy are we leaving for our children when we now have strip clubs where strip tease has become the order of the day? I urge you to consider banning all this as it is immoral. If I had it my way, I would have all these clubs shut down.
However, the Board of Censors said that morality was not a straight line and would continue consulting stakeholders. The board made it clear that it would not make arbitrary decisions.
Board Member Shingai Ndoro said:
We act as a regulator and while we are really sensitive, we then caanot ban the strip tease because we base our arguments on offering age appropriate entertainment. Entertainment and context is relative to time, age and place among other factors.
We don’t want to kill people’s creativity and deprive them of entertainment. Remember morality is not a straight line, it is about knowing context, age group, time and place, making it thereby relative.
Hatidi kutonga nebhemba (We don’t want to rule with an iron fist), we will remain a regulator hence why we called for this consultative process which is inclusive of all stakeholders.
