Two students from Cyrene High drown after canoeing accident during school trip

Two students from Cyrene High School, a form 1 student and a lower six student drowned after their canoe capsized in Masiye Dam in Matopo National Park. The two deceased and 5 other students had decided to paddle the canoe without guides while on a visit to Masiye camp. The other five students were rescued by workers from the camp.

Matabeleland South acting Provincial Education Director Mr Lifias Masukume said

Investigations are in progress. At the moment I can’t say much as we are still waiting for a report from the district office. We, however, want to express our deepest condolences to the school, district and the parents. This is a sad incident and we are with the families in prayer at this difficult time.

The deceased are Melinkosi Mhlanga (19) and Blessing Ngwenya (14).
