Mgcini Ncube (23) was sentenced to an effective 9 months in jail for stabbing a police officer Tariro Mandiringa. He had been sentenced to 12 months in prison by Kezi magistrate Jimmy Ntonga but three months of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that on August 29 last year, Ncube struck Vusumuzi Sibanda with a stone for allegedly dating his girlfriend, Loveness Nkosi. He also stabbed Sibanda once on the nose before fleeing. Sibanda reported the matter to the police who launched a manhunt for Ncube.
On November 6, police officer Mandiringa saw Ncube in Maphisa carrying a knobkerrie. Mandiringa teamed up with other police officers in an effort to arrest Ncube who produced a knife and stabbed Mandiringa on the left hand before fleeing. Mandiringa was taken to Maphisa District Hospital for treatment before Ncube was arrested.
