Harare City Council doubles tariffs for street vendors
The City of Harare has raised tariffs by more than 100 percent from $1.25 per day to $3.00 per day for street vendors who sell their wares on weekends. The council wants to increase its revenue.
Minutes from the Informal Sector Committee tabled last week read:
The director of housing and social development reported that currently, council was charging temporal weekend flea markets operating in the CBD $1,25 per day resulting in council incurring a $1 852,30 loss every month,
FeedbackThe proposed market tariff increase from $1,25 to $3 per day for the temporary weekend flea markets would result in council realising an average $3 009 surpluses per month and being able to break even.
A large number of Zimbabweans have now resorted to vending due to the high levels of unemployment.
