Man in court for killing police officer during protest

Barnabas Mwanaka (35) was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande facing murder charges. Magistrate Mazhande remanded Mwanaka to July 24 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court heard that Mwanaka and his co-accused who are still at large connived to attack police officers who were attending to a case of malicious damage to property at Deeds office. Mwanaka and his co-accused who are said to be vendors assaulted and stoned the deceased police officer Talkmore Phiri and  his colleague Concilia Gumbo. Phiri was later rescued by his workmates who rushed him to Morris Depot where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mwanaka was arrested over the weekend by one police officer who identified him in the CBD.
