Mugabe spent $53 million on foreign trips during 2016, more than money allocated to upgrade hospitals

A Consolidated Statement of Financial Performance for 2016, published in the latest Government Gazette, shows that President Robert Mugabe’s foreign travel expenses stood at $53,27 million at the end of December, against a budget of $23 million.

The statement shows that the Office of the President and Cabinet exceeded its estimated foreign travel budget of $30,7 million in the first 10 months of 2016. It also shows that ministries of Defence, Finance and Economic Development and Foreign Affairs exceeded their estimated travel budgets in the first 10 months of 2016. The Financial Gazette reports that the amount used to fund Mugabe’s trips is more than money allocated to upgrade various hospitals. Hospitals were allocated 23 million.
