President Mugabe presents $1 million cheque to AU after selling 300 cattle

On Monday, President Robert Mugabe presented a cheque of $1 million to the African Union Foundation. The cheque was accepted by the AU Commission Chairperson Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat at the AU Mid-Term Review Summit, held in Addis Ababa. This follows a pledge that President Mugabe made to donate 300 cattle from his personal herd, when he was AU chairperson back in June 2015. Speaking after the handover ceremony Mugabe said:

To develop and realise the vision set out in agenda 2063, Africa needs to finance its own programmes. Institutions like the AU cannot rely on donor funding as the model is not sustainable.

This humble gesture on Zimbabwe’s part has no universal application but it demonstrates what is possible when people apply their minds to tasks before them.

This means that each beast was going for over $3 300.
