NERA sued for $1 million for damaging and looting property during demonstrations

Citizens Against Violence and Anarchy Trust (CAVAAT), through its lawyers Zigomo Legal Practitioners, yesterday filed a $1 million dollar lawsuit against the National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA) for the loss and damage of property during violent demonstrations that took place in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) in August 2016.

CAVAAT is claiming $1 million plus interest calculated at the rate of five percent per year from the date of issuance of summons to the date of payment in full. The organisation argues that NERA being the one that called for the protest should have put in place adequate measures to ensure that its demonstration was peaceful and that no property belonging to private citizens was destroyed. It also argues that NERA failed to follow the route it had sent to the police which resulted in violence breaking out where there were no police details and other security measures.
