Beitbridge border post faces closure due to strike

Beitbridge Border Post faces closure after the Federation of Unions of South Africa and Public Servants Association served the South African Department of Home Affairs with a notice to go on strike from 19 June over the issue of overtime pay when workers work on Saturday.

The union is demanding payment instead of off days for working on Saturday but the South African government is stating that it would sustain a serious budget shortfall if it does so. Zimbabwe’s Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chairperson on Foreign Affairs, Kindness Paradza said if the strike goes ahead it will affect not only Zimbabwe but other countries. Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Obedingwa Mguni told Sunday News that he was optimistic South Africa’s government will resolve the issue and that the strike will not be more than just a go slow.
