Harare City Council expected to charge residents extra for school levy

According to recent minutes of the education, health, housing and community services and licensing committee sen by The Herald, Director of Housing and Social Development Mr Edmore Nhekairo proposed that Harare City Council can charge residents a schools infrastructural development levy which will be used to construct classroom blocks on school sites in developing settlements.

He proposed that the levy be introduced for a specified period. Nhekairo further said the schools would then be further developed by school development committees (SDCs) that would have been elected. Some members of the committee suggested that the development levy should apply to newly developed residential areas. However they resolved to recommend that council approves the creation of community-aided schools infrastructure development levy. They also recommended that the levy should be charged for a period of six months for a start.
