Chinese mine accused of abusing employees by underpaying and assaulting them

Southern Eye reports that a Chinese mining firm Goldmore Investments based in Inyathi, Matabeleland North province is allegedly abusing employees by underpaying and assaulting them.

One of the firm’s former workers Oscar Musonza, who worked as a driver told the paper that he was assaulted all over his body with booted feet when he demanded the $5 210 that the company owes him backdating to September 2015. He said that he sustained head and backbone injuries and had to seek medical attention in Bulawayo. The matter has since been reported to the police.

Other workers at the mine also confirmed that they were being abused. Southern Eye could not reach the transport manager, identified as Zhang, as his mobile phone was answered by a lady who said she was unaware of the issue. Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese referred all questions to national police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, whose mobile phone went unanswered yesterday.
