Mutare City Council officials set to be fired for corruption & fraud

Speaking to ZBC News, new town clerk Mr Joshua Maligwa for Mutare City Council said council officials are set to be fired once investigations into allegations of corruption and fraud in the running of council projects are completed.

Mutare is alleged to have been prejudiced of huge potential revenue as council officials allegedly engaged in fraudulent tender processes and corrupt activities. Ongoing investigations reveal that some council employees doubled as service providers and projects supervisors after allegedly awarding tenders for their companies for supply of services. It is alleged that senior council employees would abuse council assets such as vehicles to deliver services secretly at night, before forwarding their invoices for payment.

It is also suspected that the local authority paid for services not rendered, with huge amounts having been withdrawn to pay for certain services yet there is no tangible development on the ground. Former housing director Mr Stenard Mapurisa has allegedly submitted his resignation after some anomalies were discovered in the issuance of tickets for vendors in the central business district.
