Govt implored to engage Botswana over its shoot to kill policy after 68 cattle killed

Villagers from the Nswazi area in Bulilima District and the ZRP national anti-stock theft coordinator Senior Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza have urged the government to re-engage with its Botswana counterparts to reverse Botswana’s controversial shoot to kill policy. This follows reports that between January and April this year, the Botswana police have killed 68 head of cattle worth $35 000. The owners of the beasts only get P100 as compensation.

The policy was enacted after the Botswana government accused Zimbabwe of not taking the threat of foot and mouth disease seriously.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza said:

There is need to revisit this policy as it is affecting our national herd. Some of these cattle that are shot will be exhibits of stock theft cases and whenever we try to engage our Botswana authorities on this issue they refuse to entertain us.

Eventually, these culprits are not prosecuted even after being arrested because the evidence would have been destroyed. Villagers are really being shortchanged because they are only paid P100 as compensation for each beast lost.
