Dzamara ICU story is fake news says Hopewell Chin'ono

Award winning Journalist and New York Times Foreign Correspondent Hopewell Chin’ono has urged the media to be more responsible and to do meticulous verification before publishing stories.  This follows reports that Patson Dzamara was now in the Intensive Care Unit.  Chin’ono says the report was false and accused Dzamara and other activists of misleading people in order to elicit sympathy.

Said Chin’ono:

The media should not fall foul to the scourge of FAKE NEWS by rushing to publish stories before checking whether something is true or not. The Patson Dzamara ICU story is not true. It’s staggering that media outlets would publish on the basis of WhatsApp & Facebook messages.

Let’s be responsible as journalists & not be part of a terrible culture of spreading Fake News. Next time you are given a story on violence and hospitalization, call Counseling Services Unit who document these issues.
